Johannesburg: ECNL hosts the Global CFT Expert Hub Workshop

From November 21-23, the European Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ECNL) hosted the "Reclaiming Civic Freedoms from the Security Paradigm" global CFT expert hub workshop in Johannesburg, bringing together civil society organizations (CSOs) and activists to explore the intersection of civic freedoms and AML/CFT regulations.

Key discussions centered on how to effectively use the latest FATF Recommendation 8 changes and guidance to push back against over-regulation and the harmful impact on civil society activities at the national level. Participants also explored the challenges around financial access, crowdfunding, and philanthropy, along with the growing issue of digital surveillance of activists and CSOs in the name of counter-terrorism and security.

In addition, the workshop featured a session with UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association, Gina Romero, where participants learned about her priorities and opportunities for collaboration. Additionally, CSOs participated in a consultation with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) on the goFintel software, providing an opportunity to inquire and engage in dialogue about its impact on civil society work.
