Coalition partner Association Konekt in North Macedonia has done some pioneering work on the place and role of religious nonprofit organizations in the AML/CFT systems in the Republic of North Macedonia and several European countries. AML/CFT Risk Assessments often flag the lack of transparency and supervision of religious NPOs, even though they may fall within the FATF definition of NPOs. The legal and policy frameworks that govern this subset of NPOs is often found wanting - further complicated by the division of state and church, and the principle of freedom of religion.
